Phuket musing

We loved our stay in Phuket. The sun and surf was good for the soul.

Phuket doings

We did a lot of eating, spent lots of time in the pool, did a bit of shopping, watched the sun set on the beach and had special time with cousins and friends.

Phuket trip

A side trip to Phuket. A little slice of paradise.  Sandy beaches,  turquoise seas, glorious weather!

A welcome native...

Found in the side of the house growing quite wild... I thought rather than just pull it out like a weed, I'd give it a home... it was rather pretty...

I love these little tendrils...new beginnings...
I looked it up on the web to find out what fern this was... and I think it's Pteris tremula or commonly known as Tender Brake - I much prefer it's latin name... sounds so much more refined...

There was a fair bit of rain these past weeks...

Almost too much for some of us... I do believe the weather bureau said that we've had the driest Oct and the wettest Nov we've had in a long time...

In my absence from blogland...

We had a visit from a furry friend whose family went away to Melbourne for a week...kisses from the locals...

A handshake?

We loved your company Milly May...

Aunt Jen's baby sweater...

A dear friend of ours at church has just had her first baby girl... so I set about crocheting a sweater/cardigan for her.  Found this pattern - Aunt Jen's sweater on Ravelry and set about using leftover wool from other projects...

Started with a pink one... I omitted the sleeves with this first attempt.  Nice for those chilly morning starts seeing the weather will only get warmer...

It was so quick to crochet that I embarked on another larger one (and added contrasting colours)... when I finished the pink one (supposed to be sized for a newborn) I kept wondering if it was on the small side... it's been a while since I've held a newborn... you do forget how tiny they are when they first arrive :)

Added buttons - I love it!  I think I'm on a roll... those leftover balls of wool will have a purpose now!  Always handy to have these already finished and ready to go when the need calls for a baby present.

Homemade Ginger Beer Trial

Trialled it using Rhonda's recipe on her Down To Earth blog...

Not much success though - no bubbles...

But I bottled it anyway and refrigerated it... I sampled some, despite the distinct lack of fizz, it's a winner.  Must work out what went wrong and trial with another batch...

Tilly and the Cicada

Came home from the School Fete (on an extra hot day) to find Tilly lounged out in the back veranda with a cicada...

She toyed with it - as you do (if you're a cat that is...)

Playing with her food...

A close up... needless to say, after this pic the cicada was no more...

The homemade tutu storage carry bag

Contrasting fabric (synthetic curtain material that I bought for a song on ebay)

The tutu - I made the storage bag without a pattern (couldn't find one) - just made it up from pics on the web...

Consists of 2 circles (lined) - one with handles attached... had to buy the extra long continuous zip (that will zip up on either side of it)

Then you can fold it over like so...

And tote it along whilst the tulle stays uncrushed.  Mission accomplished.

Cultivating a thankful heart

Reminders all around the home...

It can be hard sometimes to stay content with your lot in life... counting your blessings, NAMING them one by one is a good way to start...

A king single fitted sheet from a queen flat sheet

The problem with a King Single bed is that sheets of that nature are difficult to source at Op Shops.  It's such an odd size (wider AND longer).  I did have Queen flat sheets sitting around so I thought I'd trial making a fitted sheet with the knifed corners.

Takes quite a bit of mathematical calculation... so I drew it out to work out what fits where...

Knifed the corners - didn't add elastic in the corners - maybe next time??  This was a trial after all...

And it fits!  The old flat sheet that used to sit on the bed which shifted after every sleep was sent to the wash - and now that I've done it once - I can just follow the pattern and do it again...

Took the opportunity to tidy up his room and dust it... it wasn't presentable beforehand...and it now is...

A lull

A pause in the projects for the home.  The weather has turned hot suddenly and the energy levels have dropped for me.  Still the yellow kitchen stares at me - it will be white in due time... Old Nellie keeps me company in these lull periods...I'm so glad she's part of our household.  I can't imagine life without her really.

The magic...

Of voile in the bedroom... soft, ethereal...

Just says - summer...

I love how it billows when the wind catches it... makes all those hours pinning and sewing worth it... such a temperamental fabric... softens Pip's windows significantly.

Inspired cleaning...

...of the oven which to my shame hasn't ever been cleaned all the years that we've moved in here - and I'm not entirely sure the previous owners did before they sold either... I've been yearning for a new oven - this is a fully gas one and whilst it's quirky (the light inside can be temperamental), it's still working fine and looking at the prices of new gas ovens (O my!) I decided to go with the old adage that things always look better when you give it a good clean... so I embarked on my mission...
Took out all the racks (grease caked) and soaked them in HOT water with dishwashing liquid in the laundry tub (they wouldn't fit in the kitchen sink) - had to do this twice after scrubbing because first soak didn't seem to get rid of all that grease and grime...
Cleaned the outside with just soapy water.
The deep cavernous inside... BEFORE...
Noted areas where paint had peeled off and rust was appearing... googled if it was possible to repaint ovens and turns out you can but you have to use special heat resistant paint... must research this at Bunnings (hardware store) - might turn the outside white (or as white as can be anyway)
After a decent scrub...
Sparkling... well as far as I can see anyway... almost too clean to use...
And to christen the now 'new' oven... we embark on some savoury muffins...
Olives, ham, cheese...
