A New Lamp

Needed a lamp on the side table as the chair converts to a guest bed

Thrifted lamp at the local Salvos store - purchased for $6 - it even came with the energy saving bulb!

Matthew's Quilt

I've been busy...

Planning it out...

First attempts at pinwheels...

Cutting out fabric from old shirts - I love the material of men's shirts!

More cutting out...

All stitched together - added a border from an old bedsheet...

Lovely muted colours with a dash of red... all it needs now is a good iron and then quilting!

Basil seedlings

Hoping that these grow to maturity.  Haven't had good success with seedlings - too many slugs about with all the wet weather.

Crocheted Bun Net for Ballet

The bun nets that Pip has been using for ballet seem to fall apart after a few uses - they are rather flimsy fine net like material so I sought a sturdier handmade variety.  After googling for patterns, I settled on this one with a few minor modifications.  I used black (since Pip has black hair) and 4ply cotton.  Quite pleased with the result - Pip tried it on today and said it was a good fit.  So I'll have to make a few more.

Laura's Quilt Take 2

Remember Laura's quilt?  Well, the free style quilting didn't go so well... the stitching was uneven and I couldn't control the swirling at all... much to my dismay... so I took a deep breath and started to unpick all the stitches and went back to stitching in the ditch.

O dear...

Uneven stitching close up

Stitched in straight lines in the ditch

I love the colours in the middle

Added a little tag at the back for that special touch.

New Piano Pieces

Piano Sonata in C Major by Mozart and Jesu, Joy of Man's Desire by Bach

Old Nellie and I have been getting better acquainted of late... food for the soul indeed.

A Front Entry Change

The front entrance of our home was looking a tad uninspiring - with all the drab weather I couldn't help but feel it needed a 'pick me up'. So I moved the 2 pots of topiarized ficus from the backyard to stand like sentinels on either side of the door and then rearranged the other bits and pieces. All it needs now is a new welcome mat - there is altogether too much brown in the picture - needs a bit of colour to lighten it up!  Which reminds me - I need to think of a paint colour for the door.

To Be Planted...

aloe vera plant - a gift from my mother-in-law (cutting from her garden), Tahitian lime - grafted lovingly by a horticulturalist friend from church (yes it has the dreaded citrus leaf miner but he tells me to let the new leaves show signs of life before taking the old diseased leaves off), white mulberry tree - ebay purchase which I never got to plant out (tsk tsk) because it means having to dig up front lawn but it's starting to look sad confined in the pot so I better get cracking.

I'm told autumn is the best time to be planting out trees/plants because the soil is still quite warm and it's cooling down so it gives the new plants a chance to establish some root system before going into dormancy in winter and then springing back to life again in well...spring of course.

Hopeful Passionfruit Harvest

There's so many of these on the vine - I'm willing at least some of them to go golden soon - who would've thought it took so terribly long for them to ripen?  I've read that it takes a couple of years before you can harvest passionfruit - this vine is just on 2 years old (from when we planted it out anyway), one can always live in hope.

Potato Vine

Potato vine - I love the faint hints of purple in this one that is scrambling over the arbour leading into the vegetable patch

Hairy Melon

What I thought was a cucumber plant (the perils of surprise compost vegetable growing) turned out to be a hairy melon.  My mother-in-law grows these and gave me a couple last season.  I've harvested 3.  My mother-in-law generally uses these in broth type soups.  I think I'll try this one in a stir fry - as suggested here

Cherishing What Is

Enjoying the Sunshine

I think we're all enjoying the sunshine after the deluge. There's a nip in the air which hints at the arrival of autumn. My favourite season of the year.

Laura's Quilt

My sewing station - not ideal because I have to lean over but it will have to do till I can find a small enough table to fit the space.

Purple and pinks with a splash of white.  3 inch squares except for the middle which are 2 inch ones - I haven't ventured into anything other than squares yet...

Now for the batting and the quilting.  With Frogdancer's encouragement, I might just try free style quilting instead of quilting in the ditch.  Am a tad apprehensive but willing to give it a go in an effort to avert the dreaded puckering as evidenced in my previous quilt attempts.

Joyful Simplicities

"Year by year the complexities of this spinning world grow more bewildering and so each year we need all the more to seek peace and comfort in joyful simplicities"

Bread and Butter Pickles

As inspired by L in 500m2 in Sydney and with the original recipe from Liz at Suburban Tomato I embarked on some of my own.  I didn't have tumeric or mustard seeds handy so I left them out... I sampled a couple before they went in the jar... yum...

Lessons From Breadmaking 2

This is what happens when you leave the final knead and baking to a 14yo boy... bread rolls turn out to be flat bread... still edible though. Needs more practice...

Pet Minding

We're minding a friend's bunny - the lovely MillyMay.
She's done a little re-decorating in her abode - shredded the newspaper and tipped out her food
