I've been busy

Hence the lack of posts...

Moving furniture - this space is now lacking a side table...

Added a little shelving unit (that used to reside above my sewing corner) to Pip's room.

Loving the sounds of Piano Sonata in C Major by Mozart (Andante)

Wondering who else played on these keys and left indelible marks on the ivory.

Re-potting the indoor plants

The cyclamen and begonia I got for my birthday were looking a bit worse for wear so I decided to repot them in the hope that they would perk up with fresh soil and better looking pots.  They look so much better for it!

The map and the hallway

There's this upstairs hallway that I've never really bothered to do much with but going with the home decor fervour, decided it was just the spot for a world map.  That way we can learn by 'osmosis' as we walk by daily - 'O, is that where Kazakhstan is'...

Bought a nice 'vintagey' one on ebay - glued it onto a white masonite sheet that I had lying around

Trimmed it with some beading painted black.  Slipped in pictures of friends on the side

White board section will be updated with 'fun' questions like - 'Find Moldova' or 'What is the capital of Hungary?'

A new room

Remember how we started redecorating Pip's room and playing 'musical furniture'?  We're nearly there I think...
I think it still has too much stuff but Pip's happy and that's the main thing.

Trundle bed from downstairs.  Her side table is on castors and can be moved aside when she wants to pull the trundle drawer out - it acts as a big drawer.

A second hand bassinet - repurposed to hold her many friends.

I need to build some sort of hutch over her desk so that it'll free up more desk space for her.

My favourite - a thrifted crochet rug - adds just the right touch of homeliness!

Musical chairs

or is it furniture?  Pip wants to redecorate her room which necessitated a reshuffle of furniture around the house.  Her loft bed would be sold on ebay.  The bed/trundle from the downstairs guest bedroom would be moved into her room and she'd use the trundle for storage.  I bought a lovely old bed from ebay to replace the bed/trundle and moved the cupboards around to make the room more spacious.

The lovely oak bed bought off ebay - I believe it's circa 1950

How the cupboards used to be - it had to be in that configuration because where the new single bed is now, the bed/trundle resided and if I had the cupboards any other way, we wouldn't have been able to get the trundle out from under the bed.  The side table that's on castors Pip wants me to paint white and move it up to her room

Cupboards moved.  Chenille bed spread is a thrift store find - Pip calls it the fluffy towel blanket!

The matching oak side table (actually not new, it resided in the music room and I just relocated it - together with the thrifted lamp).

Early passionfruit harvest update

Remember this act of desperation in harvesting passsionfruit unripened from the vine?  Well here's the verdict... despite reading everything to the contrary that they don't ripen off the vine... I have had some success with some...
These started to look a bit crinkly and the skin had softened so I was hoping that they would prove to be edible...

No joy - all pithy but wait... do I spy a hint of orange in there (on the left half)?  Perhaps I needed to wait longer?

So I did and this one turned a lovely banana yellow (after weeks in the fruit bowl)...

To my utmost delight - LOOK!

3 more have turned that lovely yellow and I'm hoping they are edible too!  So it is possible for them to ripen off the vine after all.  Some of those left in the fruit bowl have gone crinkly so I'll wait to see if they turn yellow too - I don't know if it's a certainty that they will all ripen in time but I'm glad some of them did!

Redecorating the garden

Whilst we're on a redecorating run, outdoors needs work too...

The middle bed cleaned out - it had the hairy melon growing in it.  Need to replenish with more mulch.  Planted out some lettuce.  Trimmed back the blackberry bush

The monster pumpkin vine and hair melon vines in a heap - I want it to rot down a bit before putting it into the council green bin.

I need to rethink the strawberry plants which have taken over in bed 1 and 3 (in the background).  They are taking too much growing space.  I have plans to relocate them into containers instead.

Chicken coop needs revitalizing as well - bits are coming off it and I want to make it bigger.  The girls are a bit squashed in there, although they free range most of the day and really only sleep there.

A shoe cupboard

Our existing shoe cupboard in the front entry space.  It's full...hence the spill over... it worked fine when the kids were younger but now that they are getting to the teenage years, the 3 levels to handle the number of shoes for 4 of us doesn't cut it anymore...

So I'm attempting to build one from old cupboard doors...

Redecorating Pip's Room

Pip's decided that her loft bed isn't suitable anymore - she's grown taller so having to duck under it to get to her desk is getting annoying.  It'll be sold off on ebay.  And yes I'm trying to get her to de-clutter at the same time although it's not easy.

The cube shelving was passed onto a friend who needed more storage.  It had to go to give us more space for a single bed to fit into the room.

RIP Tippy

Remember Tippy?  Well unfortunately, he succumbed to a bacterial disease.  Pip buried him where the old well used to be.  A ring of shells marks where he's been laid to rest.  A floral tribute of lantana and lavender.

Pumpkin reveal

See where the rot was on the skin of the pumpkin - harvested just in time.  The rest was still edible - really yummy!

The rest drying out in the sun nicely.  The hairy melon needs to be eaten soon - the pock marks on the skin look like some fungal infection.  We'll try to salvage as much as we can.

Pumpkin Harvest

I harvested the last of the hairy melons and also the Jap pumpkins

I was going to leave them on the vine for longer but am glad that I harvested them now - 1 or 2 of them have sat on the moist ground for too long and feel spongy in sections that were sitting on the ground.  I'm hoping that a couple of days in the sun will help - this is the worse one - I will probably make pumpkin soup with this one today.
