Happy New Year

The Chinese New Year that is.  Farewell year of the snake.  Hello year of the horse.

A new resident

Brought something home from the garden section in Bunnings other than bits of timber.  More lushness indoors.  Hopefully with its spot on the kitchen window sill I'm more likely to remember to tend to it.

Homespun wool knitting

There were a couple of these knobbly homespun (I think) skeins of wool l acquired a while back at the local thrift store.  Despite it being the wrong season for it (questionable as most knitters I know would attest to the fact that there is no such thing), I cast on for a shrug pattern located on ravelry.  I hope I have enough wool for it...

The kitchen sink

Admiring the milk glass compote thrifted a while back which is home to baby spider plantlets.

Finally done...

Pip's over bed table with flip top is finally done.  Repurposed the cot bed ends that I picked up at Council clean out a whole back, used the foot of the oak bed that was once a bench seat, added castors and painted...and painted...it can slide over her bed or sit at the end of it at night.

Homemade Beeswax Lip Balm

Pip has been reacting to a lot of lip products of late and it would appear that Carmex beeswax lip balm was the only thing that seemed to sit well with her.  The price of it put me off buying it on a regular basis so I attempted to make some with just coconut oil and beeswax sourced on ebay.  The first little jar done and remains to be seen if the user of it approves.

Grateful for...

Rain...even if it is just showers...the garden is drinking it in after a parched searing summer.

On the to do list

The west facing windows which include thw kitchen and Ethan's bedroom.  I have never found a satisfactory solution to the west facing kitchen window.  Whilst I love looking out to the garden when I wash up, the searing hot summer sun streaming in after noon means the blinds have to come down which inevitably results in spatters on the blind no matter how hard I try to avoid it.  Tried applying solar tint to the bottom half of the windows a few years back and it's starting to peel so I'm going to trial another solution.  Hopefully once Pip's over bed table is finished first.

Re-evaluation of Pip's room

The drop down desk only got used for a month after it was updated with a homemade hutch for it.  Subsequent homework has been done on her double bed hence the decision to build her a desk that rolled over her bed.  Of course it would mean the sale of the existing desk on ebay and a bookshelf from the study as a result.   I fitted doors scavenged off ebay to fit...they look nice after a lick of paint.  A better use of space hopefully.

And another...

Small project off the to do list... a small body pillow for me...l have been using a regular size pillow as a body pillow/bolster and it's taking up too much space on our bed at night so a skinnier version was called for.  An old A pillow that used to serve as a nursing pillow was just the ticket.

Small things

Those niggly projects that irk you whenever you see them from the corner of your eye whilst you're doing something else?  The hose reel at the front of the house was one of those.  Perched on the top of one fence post as a temporary fix until a day like today which was far too hot to work on Pip's overbed table when a more permanent abode eventuated after scrummaging through the scrap pile...now no longer an eyesore every time I pull up the driveway!

Whilst the paint dries...

On other bigger projects which I can only work on in the cool of the morning, I spied a smallish project to tackle on the sewing machine...a denim shorts bag.  I scrummaged through Pip's outgrown wardrobe and started...

Trimmed it with little daisies leftover from another project, lined with some leftover fabric...and voila...new bag.

Finishing. ..

The repurposed garden bench. Keeping true to the word for 2014...FINISHING.  Pic of all 3 benches together and the 2 recently modified ones.

Re-evaluation Ethan's room 2

It's always irked me that the mobile over bed table that I had purchased for Ethan only ever served as another horizontal surface on which to place items and was never used for what it was intended for.  So rather than force the issue I decided to work with it.  But it meant making modifications as the width of the framed legs made it awkward to slide it into the space between the desk and new wall shelf.  I found a little drawer front piece leftover from building his bed which was perfect.   I still wanted the functionality of castors as it would make it easier for me to clean that corner under the shelf.  I am pleased with the final result. Which leaves me with the old steel frame and castors for another project...

Re-evaluation Ethan's charging station

The charging station that I built for Ethan to corale all the electricals in his room didn't live up to reality.  He never closes it and uses it rather like a shelf so I thought I'd oblige with one built so that the fan can reside on it as he is currently sitting it on his desk.  And I took the opportunity to give his room a deep clean.

A tale of 2 benches

Rebuilding the benches because I have plans for a certain piece of one of them.  Utilizing the wood pile which is diminishing - yay me!

Coffee art at the local cafe next to our church.   And Tilly will testify that the weather is becoming too warm to do anything other than laze...

The Potting Corner

This corner next to the back porch has undergone a few transformations.  It does lend itself to being a potting corner work zone so it will be zoned as such for now.  The garden clean up is under way although it is slow as it is summer and it isn't easy getting momentum going on major tasks in the heat.  Slowly...finishing.

Summer Gardening

A mix of repotting, tidying up, consolidating (took down the picket fence as it was rotting and teetering after a windy spring), endless weeding and desperate attempts to keep up with the watering.

Home

Tilly's happy to be home as are we.

Word for the year

I've read on The Lettered Cottage about picking a word for the year to focus on.  I think it'll work better for me than resolutions as I have a tendency to over achieve which leaves me despondent over what I didn't accomplish rather than what I did at the end of every year.  So after much pondering,  my word of the year is FINISHING.  To focus on just the one task at hand and finishing rather than moving on to start a new one.  Actually walking right across that bridge to the end rather than stopping midway and getting on another bridge.

River Safari

We spent a day with cousins at the new River Safari at Mandai Zoo.  There were lots of fish to see as well as pandas.  We had a lovely time with my brother and his family.
