Cable management, a charging station and a seredipitous find

The old cable management and charging station was rather rudimentary and it did the job for a while... I never liked the fact that it was on the floor which made cleaning the floors a hassle.

So providentially - this happens on one of my sojourns and careful 'peering' into neighbouring piles of kerbside clean up stuff...

A plywood box that once stored wines as a gift I surmise...

Painted white - I think it will fit a powerboard perfectly and house all the gadgets and gizmos whilst recharging... now to work out how to hang it on the wall close to the power point in Ethan's room.

More on Ethan's room refurbishment

Moved things around a bit... hanging space now moved to front of room and behind the room door.

The silver drawers will go back into the built-in wardrobe to make room for a desk - the side table will move out of the room

Sigh, if only his room were so clean all of the time... projects to do - build a wall mount to hang those guitars beside the bed so they are off the floor.  I'm quite liking how it's all coming together.

The bed finally finished...

The old bedhead - now with added height and backboard so he can actually lean back against it...

Hinged with access to storage space for extra pillows.

The old growth chart that used to sit on the side of an STEN unit - I saved it and re-used it here...for old times' sake.

The final product with handles from the kitchen (yes that's another project on the to-do list).

Added wooden 'biscuits' to keep the panelling in place - shift them aside and you can then pry open the flap.

The little door at the end made from the leftover drawer front

Mattress back on (yes it's the old one - I've yet to order the new king single).  It'll have to do for now...

More kerbside finds

A chair - repainted now - should go well with Ethan's new room set up.

A metal crate.

A concrete flower pot.

Tilly is quite partial to this find!

A Birthday Dinner

At our local Italian restaurant.  Looking through the menu - pasta and pizza.  It was a low key affair just the way Ethan liked it.

Nearly there...

So finally - the bed's nearly there. I took his old bed apart and hastily tried to retro-fit everything (a single bed) into the new king size bed frame. I had to purchase some bits of wood. And then decided that because it was his birthday on Sunday - I didn't think a birthday boy should be sleeping on his old mattress on the floor, so decided to re-assemble the new bed (with slatted frame) in his room. At least then I could get his old single mattress back on and he wouldn't be sleeping on the floor...

The new bed - drawers still need handles - old single mattress back on.  New king size mattress to come...

Teenage boys tend to dump things on horizontal surfaces...

The old single bed head - it is actually the perfect size for a king single.  Still needs more painting done and I'm hoping to put more slats on the front which will open up to fit extra pillows behind the space.  I think I'll leave it for next week to do... cleaning up and re-organizing his room is in order I think...

When Things Take Longer Than Planned...

It's always hard when things take so much longer than planned... Ethan's bed is one of those... I think the difficulty lay in the fact that I'm re-using second hand materials and fiddling with how to fit it all in the grand scheme of things was the hardest... here is it in its near finished state.  I still need to take his existing bed apart and incorporate the slats/bedhead into the design... crossing my fingers that it will turn out as planned.  The reason for the difficulty is also because it needs to come apart readily so that I can take it up the stairs into his bedroom section by section (ie it must 'flat pack') to reassemble again.

Yes there's still a section that needs a door - I have a leftover tan drawer front (same size as the one in the middle right now) which I will cut down to fit.

Drawers (old kitchen ones bought for a song on ebay) which will cordon off the existing mess in his room... one can only hope with teenage boys.

The sewing starts

The new sewing corner put to use

Need to edge Ethan's quilt still

Just because Pip asked and because it was a quick project - a circle skirt from the fabric stash

Ethan's bed

Cutting the pieces to dry fit

It'll have drawers underneath - needs a paint.  Hopefully it'll be ready in time for his birthday.

Mornings here

We've had earlier than normal starts in the morning here in the household as Ethan does work experience with Uncle Ken.  It does have its benefits though, jobs get started earlier and there are moments to contemplate when the rest of the world still slumbers...

A vase of artificial flowers catching the morning light.

I sorted through the fabric stash (in the black wardrobe - fondly known as the Narnian wardrobe) and pulled out Ethan's unfinished quilt - hoping that seeing it will propel me to action and finish it.

Morning light in the stairwell...

Trellis against the shed with a baby blue potato vine at the base of it.

The level (sort of) clothesline path

The path to the clothesline.  I had planned to build a deck but thought I'd just re-use the pavers and just try to level out the area better.  This was as far as I got because I started to hit clay and it was too hard to dig down.  It's a lot better than it was before.  A little table on the side to sit the basket on (needs a coat of paint).  Will plant some low growing hedging or groundcover on either side of the path.  Overall I'm pleased.

One thing leads to another...

Isn't that always the case?  I can feel spring coming as the days have a hint of warmth about them... so the gardening tasks which require harder work are more urgent...
This was the progress of clearing around the backshed... see the variegated vinca?  It's quite weedy and whilst I love it's hardiness, it was getting too wild for my liking...so I proceeded to dig it out around the shed

Added the leftover fence palings from the now defunct chicken coop (sigh I miss the girls).

This was the clean up after - I need to remove the pavers around the clothesline and build a flat deck - I never did like the fact that I was hanging laundry out trying to balance on a slope...

The slope on the clothesline...

The dietes moved to line the fence... almost there I hope...
