Advent Calendar Finished

Pockets with numbers printed on canvas cloth

Stitched with green rick rack edging and red polar fleece (originally 'red carpet' from Pip's birthday party)

Rick rack edge - the pockets were really thick to sew - next time I won't use this method to sew one up...

Added little dolphin beads to each pocket so that...

After the verse (printables from here) is taken out of the pocket and read, the dolphins jump through the hole punched 'hoops' to secure it to the front.

Closer look at the dolphins (I had 4 colours - they were leftover from a previous beading endeavour)

Idea is so that once all 24 cards are read, you can read the whole Christmas story on Christmas Day.

All set for Dec 1!
Will probably add to this next year but this will have to do for this year.  Ethan looked decidedly disappointed that there were no food 'rewards' attached to the reading of the Scriptures... so I may put the lollies in after all... as an added incentive!

A Frugal Christmas

This year I'm trying really hard to utilize what's already around to get festive.  The Advent calendar is getting there but I got a little sidetracked and worked on little pine cone trees.  The red tags were from a British Paint Red Colour Card that I had lying around.  And little Chinese tea cups worked well as 'pots'.  Perfect.

It Is Well With My Soul

Aprons - A Change of Heart

I used to think aprons as anachronistic and dowdy superfluous additions to the kitchen.  I mean how does putting on an apron change the tedium of the tasks at hand?  How wrong I was.  I decided to don one some months ago and found the mere act of putting it on seemed to supercharge me.  It was as if the deliberate act of putting one on indicated that I meant business and was ready to put effort into whatever it was I was doing.  So I am an apron convert.  What's more, I find that the more cheerful the attire, the better I feel and that makes for a right frame of mind when tackling day to day chores.

The Proof is in the Bread

I usually use my bread machine to knead our bread using the Dough setting and then bake it in the oven in tins or as buns.  I've found however that the loaves always seem to turn out denser than the store bought ones.  So on a whim, I tried this time to 'proof' the yeast first before adding it to the other ingredients in the bread machine and found that the loaf turned out fluffier!  I think I will do this in future.

Music In The House Again

Thanks to Old Nellie, there is dulcet music floating through the house again!  Had to do some running repairs on her - you can see the original yellowed ivory keys and the whiter 'fake' ones I bought to glue onto the keys that had lost their original ivory keytops.

Ripening strawberry - I hope we get to this one before the slugs do.

Pumpkin or rockmelon vines against back fence - I plan to add a trellis to grow them vertically.

Guess who's hiding in the strawberry patch?

On the hunt again.

Who's this wanting a share of the pickings?

Okay - only after I'm done.

A New Gate

My makeshift gate into the vegetable patch needed replacing with a more permanent solution.  The makeshift gate was actually a concertina type contraption with an existing bamboo trellis.  You can see it just on the far right of this picture

More functional that's for sure!
